WHERE IS KANGAROO ISLAND?
Kangaroo Island is the third largest island off the coast of Australia. 155 km
(96 Miles) long, up to 55 km (34 Miles) wide, and covering an area of 4,500 square kilometres (1,737.5 square Miles). "We didn't realise the Island is so large" is frequently stated by visitors on their departure. Relatively mild conditions are experienced during both summer and winter, typical of the insular character of island climates. At times, cool ocean breezes make windproof clothing necessary, while central areas of the Island occasionally experience temperatures of 35-40°C (95- 104°F) TEMPERATURE Celsius to Fahrenheit multiply by 1.8 and add 32
WHAT IS THERE?
Kangaroo Island offers rugged and spectacular coastal scenery with the highest coastal cliffs in Australia. Beaches and bays of white sand an d crystal clear water abound on Kangaroo Island. North-East Coast sites such as Antechamber Bay, Penneshaw, Island Beach, Emu Bay, Stokes Bay and Snelling Beach are popular destinations for swimming, boating, fishing or just simply lazing about and enjoying yourself. The South Coast is a unique part of Kangaroo Island protected by National Parks and Wilderness Reserves created to manage this important natural history area. Featuring the magnificent and mainly pristine coastal scenery, with its high cliffs and rugged Southern
Ocean beach frontages of Pennington Bay, Bales Bay, Seal Bay, Vivonne Bay, Hanson Bay and Cape du Couedic. Vivonne Bay and Hanson Bay are considered to be two of Kangaroo Island's most spectacular destinations
Parndana Wildlife Sactuary A sanctuary for orphaned native animals and birds, the park is home to Kangaroo Island's largest private collection of native birds and animal s. The park provides an opportunity to see and feed the Kangaroo Island Kangaroos. The spacious aviaries and enclosures house koalas, echidnas, emus, wallabies, deer, cockatoos, pheasants, curlews and farm animals.
National Parks
With 21 National and Conservation Parks covering over 30% of the total area, the Island has established a reputation for the abundance of wildlife and flora.
Camping
Camping permits are available for approved Local Government camping areas, and designated areas within National Parks. There are also a number of caravan and camping grounds available.
Pets
Pets are NOT ALLOWED in National or Conservation Parks on Kangaroo Island.
Firearms
Firearms are prohibited in all Parks. Prior permission is required from all land holders in other areas.
Banking
Bank SA and the ANZ Bank have branches at Kingscote with agencies at American River, Penneshaw and Parndana. Commonwealth Bank agency facilities are available at Post Offices at Kingscote, Penneshaw, Parndana and American River.
EFTPOS and Credit card facilities are widely available.
Facilities for the Disabled
Facilities for disabled visitors are being progressively established or upgraded. Contact transport operators, or Tourism Kangaroo Island for the latest information.
Communications
The international area code for Australia is +61. For users of mobile phones Australia uses the GSM CDMA networks which is compatible with Europe, coverage is excellent in cities and major centres, however service is limited in more remote areas. Prior to travel, mobile phone users should investigate connecting to a GSM international network to enable use within Australia.
Coverage for CDMA mobile telephones is available on Kangaroo Island in Kingscote, Pardana and Penneshaw and some other areas. GSM mobile phone coverage is only in Kingscote and Penneshaw. Public telephones are located at all centres and some attractions. Internet facilities are available in a few places, including the IGA store in Pardana .
DRIVING LAWS Australians drive on the left hand side of the road. The maximum speed limit in cities and towns is 60km/h (35mph) and on country roads and highways it is 100km/h (62mph) or 110km/h (68mph). Signs indicate speeds.
DRIVERS LICENCE A bona-fide tourist may drive in Australia on a valid overseas drivers licence for the same class of vehicle. Licences must be carried when driving, in addition to a valid passport. If it is not in English, carry an International Permit or an official translation of that licence.
DRINKING & DRIVING South Australia has a strictly enforced 0.08 percent blood alcohol limit for drivers holding an open licence.
SEAT BELTS All occupants of a vehicle must wear a seat belt at all times.
